My Silversmithing Journey

Silversmithing wasn’t something I always knew I would do, but looking back, it feels like every step in my life led me here. With Native American heritage shaping my identity, I’ve always been drawn to the artistry and meaning behind handcrafted pieces. My journey truly began when I had the privilege of learning from an elder, who not only taught me the technical aspects of silversmithing but also shared the traditions, patience, and deeper significance behind the craft.

The learning process was both exhilarating and humbling. Mastering the tools—saws, hammers, and torches—was a challenge, but every mistake became a lesson. Under my mentor’s guidance, I gained an understanding of how metal moves, how fire transforms it, and how each piece carries a story. Slowly, my skills grew, and so did my connection to the craft.

One of the most impactful moments in my journey came from an unexpected loss. When my grandfather’s house burned down in a wildfire, his 1800s silver coin collection was reduced to an unrecognizable, melted mass. What was once a piece of history became something unshaped, raw, and lost to the flames. That experience deepened my appreciation for the resilience of metal—it can be destroyed, yet it can also be reborn into something new. Because of this, sustainability became a core part of my work. I use recycled metals, both silver and gold, giving old materials a second life through my craft.

Ironically, silversmithing was never something I intended to do for a living. It was a passion, a way to connect with tradition, and an outlet for creativity. That changed in 2020 when I lost my job due to the pandemic. Faced with uncertainty, I turned to my craft—not just as an escape, but as a way to survive. What started as a necessity quickly became something more: a chance to share my work, connect with others, and build something meaningful from the ground up.

Nature has always been a source of inspiration for me—its fluid lines, organic textures, and quiet strength are reflected in my designs. I strive to honor the beauty of the earth, not only in form but in the materials I use. Every stone I incorporate is authentic, never synthetic or composite. Just like silver and gold, these natural gems hold their own stories—shaped by time, pressure, and the elements.

Over time, my craft evolved, and so did my designs. Each piece I create carries a story—not just of metal and fire, but of resilience, heritage, and transformation. Silversmithing is more than a skill; it’s an extension of who I am. Through my work, I hope to share a piece of that journey with you.
